Basic Making a Mix Using Cool Edit Pro

Ingredients

You'll Need -

Cool Edit Pro 1.0 or higher
The mp3 plugin (if using below ver. 1.2)
1 gig (at least) of hard drive space

1 - Switch to Multi-Track View

Hit the button at the top left of the screen to switch to Multi-Track View.

2 - Open the Waveform List

Now open the Waveforum List via Insert -->Waveform List

3 - Open All the Tracks You Will Be Using

Hit the Open button (in the Waveforms List) to load up all the tracks you will be using in the mix. This will take some time (and lots of memory) as you load up each song and sample.

4 - Insert Your First Track

Highlight the track you wish to insert. Place the YELLOW BAR you see in the mix window at the beginning of your mix (all the way to the left). Click the INSERT button in the Waveform List.

5 - Insert Your Second Track

Left Click inside the MultiTrack View to Move the Yellow Bar around. Place the Yellow Bar approximately where you want your next track (song) to go. Highlight that song in the Waveform List and click Insert.

6 - Adjust/Fine Tune Your Track

RIGHT CLICK while holding the mouse over the second track and KEEP HOLDING. You can now SLIDE the second track wherever you want in your mix. SLIDE the track around to fine tune where it overlaps/intersects with the first track.

7 - Repeat Steps 5 and 6

Repeat steps 5 and 6, inserting and fine tuning and building up your "mix tape." Move around your mix by using the green slider bar at the top of the screen. Zoom in and out using the magnifying glasses in the middle/lower/left. The bottom left 2 Magnifiers will zoom in/out based on where the Yellow Line Marker is.

8 - Mix Down

Once you have all your tracks in and the mix finished, select Edit -->Mix Down -->All Wavs. This will take some time and consume a bit of hard drive space.

9 - Save As an mp3

DOUBLE CLICK on the newly created Mix Down file to switch to viewing it in Single Waveform View. Then select File --> Save As.

Once in the Save As windows select Save as type -->MPEG 3(FhG)(*.mp3). Then select the Options button to the right. Select the following Options - VBR (Variable Bitrate) and in the dropdown box below it, select somewhere between 10 and 30 for quality. Click OK, then click Save in the next window.

Saving and encoding the Mix Down to mp3 will also take a fair amount of time. Take it to bask in your accomplishments as you are finished.

10 - Conclusion

There are many, many more things you can do while making a mix tape using Cool Edit. You'll have to play with the program to find them out though. This is the basics. Have fun!
